2009 Varsity Football - Uncommon
While playing collegiate football, Tony Dungy’s coach used to say, “Success is uncommon. Therefore not to be enjoyed by the common man. I’m looking for uncommon people.” Well, the 2009 Varsity Football Team proved they truly were uncommon. Led by a mere 16 seniors (which was our smallest ever senior class), this year’s team achieved success uncommon for our young program. It all started in the off-season, where we set a program record with a 92% team attendance; 8 of our players (Brandon Grant, Wills Massie, Scott Hennelly, Jack Schneider, Bill Fell, John Werba, Mike Hough, and Josh Rigali) had perfect attendance in the weight room; 3 players (Ben Hohenstatt, Steve Afryl, and Mike Beckman) only missed 1 day all off-season; and we had 7 more players who earned a 95% or higher attendance. Thus, it was not too surprising that we opened up our 2009 campaign with our largest margin of victory, 55-0, which was a true team performance. The amount of broken records is extensive – 11 Academic All-Conference (John Androus, Mike Beckman, Forrest Ericksen, Brandon Grant, Scott Hennelly, Ben Hohenstatt, Wills Massie, Brandon Mruk, John Pfeiffer, Josh Rigali, and Andrew Tubek ), 5 All-Conference (John Androus, Mike Beckman, Chris Djus, Wills Massie, and Andrew Tubek), 2 Academic All-State (Mike Beckman and Wills Massie). Additionally, highlighted by John Androus becoming our all-time leader tackler, we broke 3 and tied 3 other individual defensive records; as a unit, our defense set or tied 16 program records, which include 10 interceptions and a staggering 22 fumble recoveries on the year. Offensively, we established 18 new individual records and tied 1 other. Andrew Tubek set 11 of the records, including an unbelievable 239-yard rushing performance on a muddy track versus Antioch. Junior placekicker, Mike Beckman, set the other 8 records, as well as becoming the all-time leading kicker in Lake County history with his 13 field goals, smashing the previous record of 7. As a whole, this year’s offense set 20 program records! Lastly, we will never forget what this team gave us: Our first playoff victory, which led to our 1st ever home playoff game. Although that game vs. Woodstock did not turn out the way we all would have liked, the 2009 Lakes Varsity Football Team guaranteed an unforgotten legacy – an uncommon legacy.

Sophomores Finish at 7-2
The 2009 season for the sophomores was one to remember with the team finishing with the best record a sophomore team has ever achieved at Lakes HS. The year started off on the right foot with Lakes beating Perspective Calumet-Chicago 50-12. Week 2 saw the Eagles sting the Hornets of Harvard 35-6, to start at 2-0. Week 3 had the Grant Bulldogs visit the Eagles only to be turned back toward Fox Lake with Lakes winning 28-10, as the defense came up big. With the team at 3-0, Vernon Hills was next, and they proved to have too much for the Eagles as V.H. went on to down the Eagles 20-14. The Eagles were still 3-1, and North Chicago was not up to the task to stop Lakes, as the sophomores rolled to a wet 42-6 victory as the offense exploded for 5 touchdowns in the first half. Libertyville stood next, and the Wildcat Den proved to be not too scary for the Eagles, who beat Libertyville 21-17, scoring with 2 minutes left in the game to secure one of the biggest sophomore wins in history of the program. Up next was the Panthers of Round Lake for homecoming, which saw the Eagles punt the Panthers 24-3, with the defense shutting the doors on Round Lake for the win. Antioch was next for the Eagles, and in a great high school football game, with a great environment surrounding both teams, Antioch proved too much for Lakes, 22-14. Lakes played a good 2nd half, but it wasn't enough. The last game of the season had the Wauconda Bulldogs waiting, and after all the mud and rain was done, the young Eagles came out victorious, 21-6, as the offense steamrolled the Bulldog defense in the 4th quarter. The was a special season for the Eagles, and gives them plenty of confidence for next year and the year after. The coaching staff would like to thank the parents for their support, and we will look for you next year cheering the boys on varsity.

Freshman Team: Record-Setting Year
It seems like just last week the freshmen were getting their equipment and working through hot days in the weight room and on the practice field, but that is the way an exciting season always seems to play out. The freshmen began back in August (some in June) to work towards a common program goal of uncommon effort, and the boys did not disappoint. The season began with a bang beating both Jacobs and Harvard on the road. The team was led by stellar defense in both contests and established a winning attitude right from the start of their football careers at Lakes. The Eagles played three great quarters of football against Grant but literally came up just short of the Bulldogs who recovered an exciting onside kick to seal the win. The Eagles got back to their winning ways against Vernon Hills, which was a game that the players will never forget, winning with a “walk off” kickoff return for a touchdown with roughly 10 seconds left. Beating North Chicago the following week, the team was led by a great all around effort. The Eagles met their match against a very tough and physical Libertyville team the following week, but that would be the last time the Eagles would lose the rest of the season. The Eagles dominated Round Lake in all phases of the game the following week. In the biggest and most exciting game of the year, the Eagles defeated rival Antioch with what can only be described as one of the best endings to a Lakes football game at any level in the history of the school. Keeondae Benjamin caught a pass from Jon Gomulka with no time remaining to beat the Sequoits. “Unbelievable”. The team wrapped up their freshman campaign with a Saturday morning win on the muddiest field in the state of Illinois, by winning 26 to 22. Playing in slop, the Eagles solidified the best freshman record in the 5 year history of the school. With hard work in the offseason both in the classroom and weight room, this team should continue to grow and improve, and all the coaches and parents are already talking about a successful sophomore campaign for this group of Eagle freshman.
